ESL Programs for U.S. Residents / Non-International Local Students

 

Part-time and Full-time Programs -- Our programs focus on:

* Conversation in everyday life and at work

* Academic study in all four language components: Listening, Speaking, Reading & Writing

* Sentence construction and pronunciation skills for speaking

* Comprehension of both written and spoken texts

* Basic to advanced writing skills development through writing process training

* Developing and expanding grammar knowledge and skills through writing practice

* College & TOEFL preparation

PART-TIME PROGRAMS

Individual Courses

4 Levels, Beginning/Literacy to Intermediate Multiskills/Survival English : 5+ hours per week

* Focus on English for communication

Morning and Evening classes available Tuesdays and Thursdays

Individual Academic English Courses: 6 Levels, Beginning/Literacy to Advanced: 4-14 hours per week

Writing & Grammar

Reading & Vocabulary

Listening & Speaking

* Daytime classes available Monday-Thursday

* Some evening classes offered

 

Basic Computer Skills Course

* Introduction to word processing, internet, email and keyboarding

Target Skills Program 

6 Levels, Beginning/Literacy to Advanced : 12 hours per week

    Designed for students wishing to focus on specific key language skills, the target skills program offers 12 lessons per week of instruction and workshops on either written or spoken communication. The written communication and literacy target meets mornings, while the spoken communication target meets afternoons.

Semi-Intensive Program 

6 Levels, Beginning/Literacy to Advanced : 12 hours per week

    Students who wish to work on all language skills on a part-time basis can attend full days on Mondays and Wednesdays, or on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

FULL-TIME PROGRAMS

Standard English Program  

6 Levels, Beginning/Literacy to Advanced : 18-20 hours per week

    WPC’s Standard English Program helps students expand their toolbox of English skills, and develop their proficiency in each of the four language components. Students learn how to communicate fluently and effectively in an academic setting which changes students from bystanders into active participants. Each level of instruction includes core courses in writing & grammar, reading & vocabulary, and speaking & listening. We also offer a conversation partner program to further facilitate language development and cross-cultural understanding.

Intensive English Program (IEP) 

6 Levels, Beginning/Literacy to Advanced : 26 hours per week

    WPC’s Intensive English Program (IEP) builds on the Standard English Program with additional extension workshops and electives to helps students expand their toolbox of academic English skills, and further develop their proficiency.

Academic Preparation Program

6 Levels, Beginning/Literacy to Advanced : 26 hours per week

    WPC’s Academic Preparation Program helps students challenge their academic English skills which are needed to successfully enter American colleges and universities or to utilize their English for their professional careers. In the Academic Preparation Program students add a TOEFL preparation course and Academic Survival Skills workshops to the Standard program, which already includes core courses writing & grammar, reading & vocabulary, and speaking & listening.

Premier English Program

6 Levels, Beginning/Literacy to Advanced : 32 hours per week

    WPC’s Premier English Program helps students to maximize their progress at WPC. In addition to the opportunity to take part in all of the various courses and workshops offered, the student meets with a trained tutor for 4 hours each week to work toward specific identified goals.

        The mission of Columbia School of English at WPC is to promote life-long learning in a positive, supportive, and challenging environment to students with diverse cultural and educational backgrounds who wish to improve their English language proficiency.  We accomplish this by focusing on skills development, knowledge acquisition, and personal advancement in both our students and faculty.  .

       Our ESLprograms allows students to learn basic to advanced language skills quickly but thoroughly. WPC provides a non-credit ESL program for students who want to study English in a full or part-time setting. Students who are a part of our language learning courses are involved in a very unique program which will concentrate on improvement in areas such as reading comprehension, listening, writing, speaking, fluency, grammar and vocabulary building.

 

       Western Pacific College has earned a reputation for its commitment to helping students prepare for the future academically and socially.
